As the summer months approach, many of us are thinking about how to sip more responsibly. For many that may mean enjoying wines with lower alcohol especially while the sun is hot and the temperatures are high.
Here I’ve pulled together 6 wines for our wines of the week that offer a lower alcohol content compared to other warmer climate and fuller bodied wines. Riding on the wellness wave, lower alcohol wines are finally truly starting to be accepted and considered as a premium beverage amongst foodies and enthusiasts alike. Luckily they are also started to taste a lot better than you think – so don’t be worried about losing the taste when it comes to these wines either.
To understand why wines have lower alcohol, overall you have to understand that white wines that are meant to be young and refreshing in flavour can sometimes be naturally lower in alcohol if harvested at the right time. This can also mean the grapes are sometimes harvested earlier than usual if that is what the winemaker intends for the wine. The more grapes stay on the vine and see/feel direct sunlight to mature the more sugar is developed inside of the grape and therefore the more alcohol that naturally appears in the wine to turn to alcohol. These days winemakers are getting crafty in the vineyard to be able to make great wines that have lower alcohol for you to enjoy.
