Unless you’re an A-list star with designers on speed dial or a socialite with a bottomless trust fund, it’s almost impossible to biannually re-invent your wardrobe for the next season based on the trends from fashion weeks. Everyone, however, can easily partake in the beauty trends, and that’s why checking out the models’ makeup and hair is secretly our favourite part about watching runway shows. Here are our top 5 beauty trends from New York Fashion Week for Spring 2014, which we’ve already started rocking.
West Coast Surfer Girl
If last season was all about punk and next wave grunge, we’re clearly going from the streets of London and Seattle to the sunny beaches of California for Spring 2014. Surfer girl sexiness is the new grunge glam next season with designers like Marc Jacobs opting for bold teal eyeliner by Nars to complement his collection. At Chadwick Bell, models wore bright orange lipstick that popped like beach volleyball-worthy Zinc of the ’80s, paired with tousled beach hair. At Christian Siriano, girls wore eye-catching Hourglass Liquid Rouge Lipstick in Muse while their hair was made to look post-surfing session sexy in messy ponytails.
Flower Child 2.0
If the new surfer aesthetic is a sign that designers might be experiencing a strange but nevertheless refreshing burst of happy-go-lucky positivity for Spring 2014, get a load of one of our favourite hair trends from New York Fashion Week: miniature floral adornments. Forget daisy chains, we’re all about Spring 2014 floral hair pieces that are actually a series of individual tiny flowers worn throughout the hair. At Honor, models wore low ponies with forget-me-not inspired hair accessories pinned throughout the ponytail above the elastic. At Zac Posen, it was all about romance with messy bun-like updos formed by pinning hair back in large sections and then topped off with small silk blossoms scattered throughout the ‘do.

Snow Queen
While white has a tendency to seem more like a winter shade, it definitely makes eyes pop when applied with a little care. At Tibi, models sported frosted eyeliner for Narnia-worthy boldness while at Philip Lim, makeup artist Francelle Daly used NARS to complement Lim’s holograph-inspired collection with ethereal white eyes.
Purple Lips
Sure, orange lipstick is also a huge trend for Spring 2014, but we can’t help but love the purple lip trend just a little more. Models at Prabal Gurung let their lips do the talking on the runway with feminine purple pouts while models rocked fuschia lipstick at Nicole Miller.
Striped Nails
We’d definitely had enough of over-the-top nail art by early 2013, but we’re happy to see that designers are still getting creative with nails while exercising a little restraint for Spring 2014. We noticed a ton of designers opting for bold lines on nails instead of the reverse French mani and nearly nude nails that have become so popular in the post-eccentric nail art era. At ICB by Prabal Gurung, models sported a stripe of holographic foil down the center of their nails. At Christian Siriano, nails were nude, save for a bold yellow stripe. At Tibi, lead manicurist Jin Soon Choi created a pattern using line symbols made popular by American nomads in the 1920s to help other travelers navigate their way around.
