Toronto has a complicated relationship with sports teams. Most sports fans are aware that the NHL’s Maple Leafs have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, but that the NBA’s Raptors won it all as recently as 2019. The Blue Jays always seem to come close but fall just short, but Toronto FC won the MLS Cup in 2017. Now, thanks to the Canadian Football League, we can add another victorious Toronto team to the list: the Argonauts.
The Toronto Argonauts are the 2022 Grey Cup winners
Toronto’s CFL team beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-23 on November 20th to secure the Grey Cup victory. It was the team’s first win since 2017, and the Argonauts dethroned the two-time champion Blue Bombers for the title.
The Blue Bombers were heavily favoured to win the contest on their own turf, Mosaic Stadium. Winnipeg’s team was expected to charge to their third straight victory in the 109th Grey Cup matchup, but could not defeat the visiting Argonauts who soared to victory with a huge last-minute drive. The Blue Bombers’ Janarion Grant even set a CFL record with a 102-yard punt return touchdown, but his club’s effort ultimately came up short.

Argonauts starting quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson suffered a thumb injury late in the fourth quarter, prompting backup quarterback Chad Kelly to tap into the game in relief. He’s the nephew of NHL great Jim Kelly, and he delivered under pressure. Chad Kelly, under tons of pressure from the Blue Bombers’ defence, led the deciding drive with under two minutes left that would ultimately change the Argonauts to victory.
The victory comes after the Argonauts started the season 4-5, and played a series of heroic contests on their home turf, BMO Field. Despite playing in Regina (where the Winnipeg Blue Bombers play), a huge celebration from the Argonauts team followed the victory, and the party made its way all the way back to Toronto. Congratulations to our Toronto Argonauts on their huge victory!
