There’s no doubt that things can get crowded at the Bloor-Yonge subway station during rush hour. The station currently gets approximately 220,000 riders on daily basis. Since it’s a transfer station where people can get access to both line one and line two it’s a popular stop. The TTC expects significant ridership growth in the next few years, which is what has inspired this renovation.
What changes to expect
Lots of changes are going to be made to give riders a more comfortable commuting experience. There will be a new spacious second platform for Eastbound riders. The platform for line two westbound riders will also get reconfigured. To improve accessibility there will be new stairs, escalators, elevators, and barrier-free exits. Riders can also expect new art displayed at the station as well as utility upgrades.
When will these changes be implemented?
By 2029 the TTC predicts that there will be 280,000 riders per day to Bloor-Yonge station and 86, 000, 000 riders annually. The project is currently at Stage Gate 3, in 2021, 30% of the design was approved by the TTC board. This includes the approval of the overall project performance baseline definition for the project scope, the project delivery strategy, scheduling and cost. Construction for this expensive renovation is expected to start in 2024. These improvements are estimated to cost 1.5 billion, which is set to be funded by the City of Toronto, the Province, and the Federal government
