With TIFF blasting off this week, the Scotiabank Theatre located on Richmond and John is going to be buzzing with all kinds of life. New films, hardcore fans, and, if you look carefully – you’ll also catch the city’s most maniacal foodies. Why the latter? Because right across the street from the Scotiabank Theatre, Toronto’s long awaited restaurant/snack-bar hybrid Thoroughbred Food and Drink is celebrating its much-anticipated grand opening this week.
Thoroughbred’s head chef and co-owner is Toronto’s very own Ariel Coplan, the diabolical genius behind Toronto Underground Market’s infamous foie-gras poptarts. Coplan is joined by fellow Torontonian co-owners Jacob Fox, as well as Robin Kemp.

Housing two separate floors, each with its own distinct menu, Thoroughbred is one part casual snack bar, one part contemporary Canadian dining room. On both ends of the brand, Thoroughbred’s fare is inspired by Coplan’s love for this city, and the devoted (read: hungry) foodies that inhabit it.
The authentic Canadian menu celebrates the diversity of our country’s palate, while paying homage to the flavours of our youth. Coplan is also stressing a healthy side to his menu, including big salads and healthy cocktails (is Vodka gluten free?). Brand new and close to home, Thoroughbred is a great place to mix your favourite nostalgic flavours alongside bold new variations (case and point – see the spicy Kung-Pao Cauliflower).
So in between star-gazing and movie-watching this week, stop in and check out the new kid in town! Thoroughbred Food and Drink is open Tuesday through Friday for lunch from 11:30am – 2:30pm.; and Tuesday through Saturday for dinner from 5pm until 2am.
