Scarborough-born co-founders of The Black Academy, Shamier Anderson and Stephan James, are joining forces with CBC, Insight Productions, and Bay Mills Studios to commemorate the debut of The Black Academy’s award show. The event will feature 90 minutes of performances, award presentations and tributes honouring Black Canadian talent, from Live Nation Canada’s HISTORY in Toronto. The event will be hosted by singer Keshia Chanté, while other honorees, performers, and presenters will be announced in the upcoming weeks. Founders of The Black Academy, Anderson and James, CBC and Insight Productions released news of the first four recipients of the 2023 Legacy Awards.
Here are the recipients of the 2023 Legacy Awards:
- Canadian screen industry godmother Tonya Williams
- Legendary filmmaker Julien Christian Lutz (aka Director X)
- Platinum-selling artist Jully Black
- Rising star LU KALA.
“Our priority is to showcase Black talent and to share the remarkable achievements of our community with the entire country – especially young Canadians – so that they can be inspired by these exceptional role models,” says Stephan James.

As of August 31, tickets for the Legacy Awards, airing September 24, will be made available on Ticketmaster. Tickets start at $120. The Legacy Awards will be available on CBC and CBC Gem on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. AT/9:30 p.m. NT).
