Last week we stopped by Cambie Street’s go-to spot for gifts and home décor, WALRUS Boutique, for an après-work meet and greet with Native Shoes CEO Scott Hawthorne (one of the company’s original founders) and Creative Director Mark Gainor who was in town to celebrate the release of the brand’s Spring 2014 collection.
A packed room of Vancouver’s style-savvy pros, tastemakers and creative elite were there to take in the full line-up of Native’s comfy, odour-resistant and vegan offerings (which now includes shoes for kids) at the special pop-up for this homegrown footwear label.

Guests mixed, mingled and made their way around the store while sipping wine and samples of Vitae Juice (another Vancouver-based company) and noshing on sweet and savoury bites such as charcuterie and miniature cupcakes.
Inspired by classic sneaker-style silhouettes, Native Shoes have adopted an ingeniously light-as-air comfort factor we adore. Dubbed as ‘footwear for the future,’ Native’s aesthetic is the perfect mix of relaxed, flexible and active – perfectly suited to any situation and style (and definitely a go-to choice for the city’s fashion-forward).

Since launching in Vancouver in 2009 Native Shoes has consistently grown in popularity; now sold globally and online with bold colours, designs and (for the 2014 line) unique floral prints described as being like a “garden party gone wild.” With an ample assortment of shoes to choose from – not to mention brilliant shades of poppy red, sea-foam green and sorbet-orange – we’re betting these lightweight kicks will be a go-to pick for the season ahead.
