If you’re looking to spice up date night this weekend, look no further than Gastown’s newest interactive hot spot, Smartypantz.
Get your mind out of the gutter — we’re not talking about anything XXX-rated. Rather, we’re raving about their clever series of escape rooms featuring five uniquely twisted puzzles that groups of four to 12 people can have fun solving in under an hour. We test drove Smartypantz ourselves, and wound up scoring a sneak peek of the various elaborately-decorated rooms they’ll have up and running by Saturday.

Opt to tackle the Twilight Zone in Dream-Scape (touted as one of the hardest rooms) or face your fear of the paranormal in Morning Never Comes. Those with nerves of steel might enjoy Thirst For Murder, where you and your friends will land yourselves in the basement of a serial killer. Alternately, keep it relatively light by trying to escape the Doomed Submarine before it sinks. Yes, that is light.
We completed Spies and Lies, and broke our way into a detective’s office to retrieve a secret file in 45 minutes. Sounds easy, but it’s not.
The talented team behind Smartypantz has done an incredible job at creating truly authentic-feeling experiences for guests – with great attention to detail paid in all aspects of design (thanks to their genius set decorator, Heidi). A staff of professional actors play their respective parts brilliantly, setting the stage for each story’s background and getting groups geared up to play. In short: Spartypantz is like being fully immersed in tale and setting — so you’re guaranteed to get a totally unique experience. It blows the competition out of the water.

Open Sunday and Wednesday until midnight, 1am Thursday through Saturday, and closed Monday and Tuesday, Smartypantz will attract a curious crowd en route to or from their regular watering hole.
