We popped by the opening of Yaletown’s first cupcake shop last week and were in for a sweet surprise. This wasn’t your typical bakery opening (given the setting was in the heart of Yaletown off Hamilton Street). Our arrival saw a party already in full pink and white-hued swing.
Owned by Tessa Sam, Sweet Bake Shop has been expertly transformed to reveal a playfully chic shop we’re already fans of. Large windows showcase row upon row of sugary-sweet confections you’ll drool over as the scent of over a dozen different cupcakes wafts onto the cobblestone street. Clearly, Sam has an already ravenous fan-base based on the number of attendees who were on-hand to help celebrate her baked confections. Sweet Bake Shop’s team was hard at work creating a line-up of custom cakes, meringue clouds, cookies, and mini cupcakes for the night’s launch event.

The shop is fun, flirtatious, and gorgeous inside. We adore the punches of pink, playful “press for champagne” wall hanging, and collection of unique, tongue-in-cheek artwork throughout. Front and center, though, it’s all about the simple display case that does its job drawing the eyes (and appetite) home. We loved the attention to detail Sam’s employed to customize the store’s décor (especially the chandelier constructed with spray-painted utensils and the antique settee).
Beyond the baked goods though, Sweet Bake Shop also features plenty of retail items perfect for party planning, favours, and last minute gift ideas – something you don’t often see in your typical bakery around town.
Treat your sweet tooth and pay them a visit at 1141 Mainland Street from 10am until 6pm, Mondays through Saturdays. For more details, visit sweetbakeshop.com.
