VAN: Tacofino Opens Taco Bar January 2015

Soon enough you won’t have to head south to score a taste of authentic Mexican-inspired cuisine when fan favourite Tacofino opens the doors to its new “Taco Bar” restaurant this month. We’ve got the scoop on just what you can expect from the team behind this popular culinary pick (which could be ready as early as today!)

Located in the heart of Gastown, the ever-popular Tacofino food truck line will be set to welcome eager diners to a new bricks-and-mortar spot secured at a beautifully-restored heritage building on 15 West Cordova. We gotta say, our tastebuds are already dancing!

The new 3,000-square-foot space, dubbed “Taco Bar,” is tucked just off Blood Alley Square and features an 80-seat dining room with a 20-seat bar serving up tequila and mescal-style cocktails, eight taps of local beers, as well as plenty of Mexican and imported cerveza available by the bottle and can. We’re betting no patron will go home thirsty.

Stylings were envisioned by Vancouver-based designer Shiloh Sukkau, who took great care in creating the perfect laid-back look synonymous with laissez-faire elements of beach retreats like SoCal, Baja, and Tofino.

Through the ample use of imported beige and light-brown tile punctuated by splashes of green, cement breeze blocks, handmade lights, and light-wood accents, Sukkau has managed to invoke an authentic air of sunshine, surf, and sand throughout the space.

In addition to the main dining area where guests will be able to get cozy during the winter months, Taco Bar also features a sweet little 420-square-foot patio out back that we’re thinking will be the perfect spot to knock back a few tequila shots in the heat of summer.

In an effort to pay homage to its Tacofino roots, hungry diners in a rush can still opt to do just that via a separate entrance that’ll land them at the Burrito Bar at 15 West Cordova – serving up a variety of burritos and tacos.

UPDATE: Due to unexpected delays, Tacofino’s Taco Bar in Gastown will now be opening on January 9.
