We’ve rounded up our top picks for the Vancouver weekend ahead, just in time to save you from boredom. Read on and gear up to get into the festive spirit with an eclectic mix of offerings.
Have you checked out the Van Dusen Gardens Festival of Lights yet? If not, be sure to pop by this weekend to check out the sprawling grounds that are now strewn with more than a million sparkling lights. The gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland complete with gnome performances, a shadow puppet show, live music, festive bites, and more.
If you’re feeling up to it Saturday morning, rise early and grab your best ugly sweater and partake in the 5KM Ugly Christmas Sweater Dash. This year, the Ugly Christmas Sweater Dash promises to be bigger and better than ever, featuring holiday-themed stations along the course, snow blowers to add to the festive spirit, and a hot chocolate station at the finish. It all goes down at Olympic Village Square. To register or for more details about the post-run party, click here.

If you were lucky enough to have won our flash Vancouver contest with Got Craft?, kudos. If you didn’t win, no worries – you can still head down to the annual holiday edition of Got Craft? event taking place all weekend long at Maritime Labour Centre (1880 Triumph Street) for your artisan fix. Score some fab finds as you peruse tables and displays featuring original works by more than 75 local crafters (and make a serious dent in that holiday gift list).
One of our all time favorite festive flicks is taking over the Rio Theatre screen this Friday night: Home Alone! You better bet we’ll be there with bells on… and you should be too. I mean, Kevin would approve of a theatre that sells booze and serves up plenty of food (mmm… grilled cheese anyone?). Tickets are $8.00 at the door (or save $2.00 if you show up dressed like one of the thugs).
Head to Robson Square this weekend and grab a pair of skates for a little whirl around the rink. The Robson Square Ice Rink and Plaza is back in business and the perfect spot to head to for some casual festive fun. Open every night until 9pm (and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday), they’ve got rentals, hot chocolate, and snacks to keep you fueled.

Hot Art Wet City presents Kyle Bottom’s Comedy Bucket this Friday night and it’ll be one to remember. It’s the only show where comedians are at the mercy of their audience. All who attend the show will be given a slip of paper to write anything they want on it, anonymously. It lands in a bucket for a talented group of comedians to create a performance out of at random. You’ll be left laughing at the hilarity of it all – that’s pretty much guaranteed.
