Check out our latest picks of happenings in and around YVR, just in time for the weekend…
Eastside Flea
Get your shop on and head to one of several seasonal (and local) markets popping up over the coming weekend. Start off by heading to the Eastside Flea Midtown Pop Up Shop after work on Friday (585 E. Broadway). It features a rotation of vendors showcasing their wares (more than 25 different ones to peruse). Check out demos, workshops, relax in their lounge, and score plenty of extra goodies to head home with.

Next up, don’t miss the East Flea Summer Market (Saturday) at the Wise Hall. This one features more than 40 different vendors, takes its name from the ever-popular Brooklyn Flea in NYC, and is fully loaded with original finds. Looking to score retro duds, vintage shades, collectables, handmade leather goods, costume jewelry and everything in between? Yeah… you’ll want to check it out. East Flea Summer Market is located at 1882 Adanac Street; shopping starts at 10am sharp.
Portobello West Market
Follow suit with a bit more retail therapy and don’t miss the Portobello West Market over at False Creek’s Olympic Village. Score locally made goods with a unique twist at this popular community-minded market. Listen to live music, nosh on tasty treats, and bid on silent auction baskets. Entry is only $2, and the market (open Saturday and Sunday) features more than 75 vendors – there’s something for everyone and all tastes.
Vancouver Comic Arts Festival
Also happening this weekend in YVR, the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival kicks off at the Roundhouse Mews in Yaletown (runs Saturday and Sunday). It’s a celebration of comics that enjoyed its launch in May 2012 and features readings, panels, and workshops, culminating in a two-day exhibition for cartoonists from across the country and down the coast.

Cirque du Soleil: TOTEM
In case you haven’t noticed the giant yellow tents that have recently popped up by False Creek adjacent to the TELUS World of Science, it’s Cirque du Soleil’s latest, TOTEM. Tickets for this weekend’s performances are available here, and it is definitely an acrobatic show not to be missed. Tickets start at around $100, and matinee and evening performances are ongoing until July 6th.
‘Food 4 Thought’ Gala
Get dolled up for a cause this Friday night and nab tickets to attend the ‘Food 4 Thought’ Gala at Science World. It’s in support of Vancouver’s much-loved Backpack Buddies program. The interactive and fun-filled evening will raise funds for this charity that provides students in Vancouver’s inner city schools with backpacks filled with nutritious food to help sustain them through the weekend. Pick either the full dinner ($250) or show your support by attending the post-dinner cocktail party ($75). Find all the details here.
