Don’t let people tell you your 30s will be the best time of your life in a tone that suggests your looks will fade so you better find inner peace. Vicki’s Pick is a weekly beauty column that features Vicki’s all-time favourite beauty products and latest discoveries for women in their 30s who plan on staying pretty on the outside for a long, long time. Inner peace is optional.
If I actually bothered to keep a log of where I spend the most money, I’d wager a good guess it would be the drugstore. In fact, I think my Optimum points history would do a better job explaining to my therapist what’s been going on in my life than I ever could. I’m a writer and, despite what Carrie Bradshaw might have made you believe, writers are poor. When I need a pick-me-up, Shoppers Drug Mart is my Saks Fifth Avenue. Sometimes I go in thinking, I’d really love some orange Tic Tacs – only to leave with a bag full of body washes, cotton balls, and anything else that speaks “Treat Yo’self” to me.

Last week, I went to one of my favourite Shoppers Drug Marts on Queen West near University. It’s a fairly far jaunt from my apartment, but I go to this one specifically when I’m out of Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. The beauty department at this particular location has cosmetic lines that the other ones just don’t. It’s like Sephora with Optimum points! Yes, these are the little things that bring me joy in life…
On this visit, I got to talking to the beautician on duty about what I could also do about the giant pimple in the middle of my forehead. That’s when she introduced me to Bourjois, a French brand owned by the same company as Chanel – so the products are quite similar in quality but are dramatically less expensive. (Apparently Sephora originally planned to carry Bourjois but couldn’t get exclusivity and ultimately decided against it… Somehow this detail made Bourjois even more appealing to me and explains my decadent purchase.)
Almost $100 later and I left with Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation, Bourjois Happy Light Ultra-Covering Sober, and Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder 10 Hrs Matte Finish & Natural Healthy Glow. Think of all the Optimum points! Better still, all three products actually worked wonders hiding the monstrosity I managed to grow between my eyebrows.
But now that my skin has cleared, I’m only wearing the unifying powder during the day with an ultra-light foundation from another company. The powder is matte yet hydrating and is virtually invisible. I also love knowing that it has a rep for being similar to Chanel’s Les Beiges compact powder. It sets foundation perfectly, but I’ve even let my guy friends use it on clean skin when they’re attempting to take shine-free photos for their Tinder profiles. Besides, the sooner I use it up, the sooner I can get back to my happy place: the modern-day mega-drugstore.

Oh, who am I kidding? I could really use some orange Tic Tacs right about now…
