Don’t let people tell you your 30s will be the best time of your life in a tone that suggests your looks will fade so you better find inner peace. Vicki’s Pick is a weekly beauty column that features Vicki’s all-time favourite beauty products and latest discoveries for women in their 30s who plan on staying pretty on the outside for a long, long time. Inner peace is optional.
I blame Downton Abbey, but there’s nothing I find steamier these days than going for a hot pot of afternoon tea and warm crumpets with a sexy suitor. (Bonus points: meeting Tinder matches in broad daylight is a safe and sensible way to meet strangers, it turns out). I’ve been so obsessed with my new throwback late-day caffeine fix that I even recently compiled a list of the Best Afternoon Tea Spots In Toronto, which is perhaps why I’m also currently all about Demeter Earl Grey Tea Cologne Spray.

Demeter Fragrance Library is famous for its colognes inspired by everyday scents that nevertheless make for unlikely fragrances, from Demeter Laundromat to Demeter Crayon. There’s even Demeter Funeral Home and Demeter Glue for the beautifully demented among us. I’ve always been a big fan of the brand’s Grass fragrance for the summer months, but I’m switching it up for 2014 if only because Lady Mary is my favourite style icon du jour – at least of the fictional variety.
While a fragrance inspired by a hot bevvy seems more winter appropriate, the citrus undertones from the natural oil of bergamot in Demeter Earl Grey Tea make it fresh and vibrant enough to spritz on even in the midst of a global warming-induced Toronto heat wave. It’s a light enough fragrance that you can even keep it in your purse for a mid-tea date powder room touch-up after the cucumber sandwiches have been served but before the miniature pastries, obviously. It’s what Lady Mary would do… if her courtships were less about forming strategic socio-economic alliances and more about just plain ol’ Tinder swiping right. Sometimes the 21st century is a little more civilized than we give it credit for.
