Don’t let people tell you your 30s will be the best time of your life in a tone that suggests your looks will fade so you better find inner peace. Vicki’s Pick is a weekly beauty column that features Vicki’s all-time favourite beauty products and latest discoveries for women in their 30s who plan on staying pretty on the outside for a long, long time. Inner peace is optional.
When people introduce me to their babies for the first time, they often mistake the tears in my eyes for an overwhelming sense of wonder and the miracle of new life. Truthfully, all I can hear is Elaine Page singing, “All alone with the memory of my days in the sun,” while I behold the new baby’s un-weathered skin. New parents then jump at the chance to tell me stories about all their newborn’s firsts, as if I’d be impressed to know that their baby can nod its head and hold its neck up straight. I know turtles that can do that sort of thing. Distracted by my sudden obsession to look impossibly innocent and fresh for my age, I always free myself from these types of conversations by insisting I’m late for therapy just so I can get my hands immediately on the next best thing to newborn skin for adults: Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup.

Like most people in the beauty industry, I heard the rave reviews for this product when it first came out, but since I’m not usually a foundation enthusiast I only ended up trying it for the first time last year when I was doing a story with Canadian actress Sarah Gadon. I couldn’t help but get distracted by how porcelain her skin looks even up close, like she’s a walking Renoir painting. Perhaps I started singing, “All alone with the memory…” out loud, but she was quick to tell me that Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup was her go-to foundation and I was instantly sold.
Before this product, I rarely wore foundation before sunset, but this stuff is so light and almost weightless that I don’t even notice it’s on, and the SPF 15 factor makes it seem almost silly not to wear it in the daytime. What I like best about it is that I can use just a couple drops to even out my skin tone for a totally natural look, or I can layer it at night for Grace Kelly-worthy perfection. It’s made with a fusion of oils and pigments, so it feels like liquid silk when I apply it and it never cakes or flakes even if I wear it from morning until late at night. In fact, it’s one of those rare foundations that actually doesn’t streak pillows on those happy occasions when taking makeup off before bed just isn’t in the cards. Bonus points: Next time you cross paths with a baby with amazing skin, you won’t even feel like crying jealous tears.
