As we begin to celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s begin with a trip across the ocean to visit Spain. With close to one million hectares of vineyards, Spain has more land under vine than any country in the world and is a leader in organic viticulture as well. These six award winning wines are made by female Spanish winemakers, who are talented and helping to pave the way forward in sustainability and success!
Paco y Lola Albariño D.O., Rías Baixas (West Spain)
The grape in this wine is called Albarinho – an indigenous grape to Spain (and also to portugal where it is called Alvarhino). These wonderful white wines are fresh, filled with citrus, peach and floral notes and are perfect pairings with green salads, thai food, seafood and sushi. This wine is made by Winemaker & industry leader, Nuria de la Torre Sayáns. This is a very unique and special region producing wonderful white wines in coastal climate. Rías Baixas is a celebratec region with 50% of its winemakers being female! What a fabulous region – if you love this region, keep a look out for Spain’s Rueda region as well!!
El Petite Bonhomme DO, Jumilla (SE Spain)
Looking for a red wine adventure – dive into El Petite Bonhomme from the rustic nad renowned region of Jumilla. The grape inside is called Monastrell and the taste is spicy with notess of ripe fruit and sweetly fragrant oak. Juicy and delicious wines from this region are grown on high altitude vines and this wine is made by Nathalie Bonhomme – A canadian who is originally from Quebec and then moved to Spain to make wine!

Lan Crianza D.O., Ca Rioja
A favourite by many, this tempranillo wine, has a refined nose with predominant notes of red and stone fruits: strawberry, raspberry and elegant notes of vanilla, caramel and cinnamon. Made by Maria Barua working in a sustainable way and all vine work done by hand by her and her team.
Campo Viejo Reserva D.O., C Rioja
An iconic wine, loved by Canadians and wine enthusiasts alike. This wine is made from Tempranillo and made by legendary Winemaker Elena Adell who strives to produce wines that allow you to live life more colourfully. She began her career as an Agricultural Scientist and then moved into winemaking and she also helped to design the winery itself – talk about inspiration!
Williams and Humbert Dry Sack Sherry D.O., Jerez (South Spain)
Nearly 130 years old – Dry Sack is one of the world’s most popular sherries. At the winemaking helm is Paola Medina Earning top awards around the world for her iconic Sherries – dry sherries are her favourite and she suggests pairing it with mexican cuisine!
Pares Balta D.O. Cava (NE Spain)
The word Cava is Catalan for the word “Cellar”. Cava is made in the same way as champagne. Three Grapes: Parellada, Macabeu and Xarel·lo. This wine is made by a talented winemaker and owner Marta Casas and her sister in law who make wine with an organic and bio-dynamic philosophy – she is just fabulous and so are her wines.
