For World MasterCard Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015, Vv Magazine’s fashion editor Philip Mak will be giving his daily doling of sartorial sass straight from the catwalks of David Pecaut Square. Like we’d have it any other way, right? Tune in for his take on the Good, the Bad, and the Meh of World MasterCard Fashion Week 2015.
“Vawk has been brought to you by Subway.” Yes, that is a thing. Yes, the struggle is real. In Toronto’s notoriously difficult –and Darwinian– fashion economy, it never ceases to amaze how creatives in the city fund their work. I’m not judging by the way, I seriously respect the hustle.
In celebration of this sandwich/sartorial union, Vawk sent a Subway-themed four-piece collection down the catwalk. We’re talking lettuce-inspired couture here. Whatever – dress fresh, eat fresh. You can keep that one as a freebie, Subway.

The overall Vawk collection featured heavy in circular colour blocking, 70s-inspired flowing pants, sheer cut outs, and a varied colour palette of fuschia, cherry red, monochromatic black and white, and camel. The designer jazzed up his pieces with metallic gold sequins, palm tree-shaped detailings, and large circular buttons across the chest. The show wrapped pleasantly with a surprise appearance by Canadian modelling legend, Stacey McKenzie.
Montreal designer Melissa Nepton presented a strong show, featuring oversized fashion-forward vests, a variety of luxurious white furs, and metallic fabrics. Her mastery of knitwear is evident, and the cuffs of her pants felt 70s-inspired without trying too hard. The third act of her show featured a series of peach and grey sportswear-inspired looks which were incredibly wearable.
David Dixon’s 20th anniversary show was everything you’d expect from the designer. His elegant creations played heavily on contrast, with ruffles juxtaposed against leather body corsets; armour-like vinyl against whimsical fur; and heavy gunmetal chain accessories paired with flowing black evening gowns. As with everything Dixon does, it felt like a thoughtful balance of classic style and the current zeitgeist.

The Good: David Dixon’s heart-warming pre-show video. It truly is amazing to see a designer, Canadian or otherwise, last 20 years. The fact that he’s from Toronto and stayed here makes it even more special.
The Bad: Vawk’s embellishments. From the giant buttons on the chest to the little blue palm trees (or were they starfish?) on the cropped jacket — they felt a little unnecessary. Darewesay it cheapened the collection?
The Meh: While the majority of her collection was lovely, Melissa Nepton’s pattern choices were nothing to write home about. Not awful, not great, just… “meh.”
Trends: Fun fur, luxurious knits, vests as a key layering item, seasonless styles, winter off-whites, jumpsuits, lettuce.
