But halfway through August and there are already five new restaurants that are on our must-try radar. Two seafood joints, two pizza joints, and one that we can only think to call “electric pub”? Here’s your Wednesday rundown of what’s hot to trot on the Toronto restaurant scene…
Red Fish recently opened up at 890 College Street. We’d heard about a new restaurant coming courtesy Jaime Duran (ex-Fishbar) – whose specialty was that restaurant’s wine and beverage program – and according to Post City he’s teamed up with Chef David Friedman, also previously of the Dundas and Ossington spot. What are they serving? No surprises here: Seafood. Sustainable seafood, to be more accurate.
With the city’s love affair with Japanese cuisine in full flight, Kanji Sushi (pictured) opened up shop at 1346 Queen Street West. Toronto Life‘s photos are drool-inducing for any maki lover. The decor looks rad, the drinks following fad, and the sushi not half bad. What more could you want?

Johnny Jackson – we’re unsure who he is and all prelim marketing the new electric restobar/pub at 587 College Street has sent out tells us we’re not allowed to ask – held its grand opening Saturday. The menu names and descriptions elicit giggles, and their Yelp blurb about JJ leaves us scratching our heads: “If he happened to inherit a tavern, it would look a lot like this. Bit of this. Bit of that. Some food at the back of the house…If you get it, fine. If you don’t, no worries. Pull up a stool, turn off your phone – grab a drink and let ‘er rip.”
North of Brooklyn Pizzeria started slinging dough last week, and you can find them at 650 1/2 Queen Street West. BlogTO shows a restaurant with a keen sense for shabby chic decor, some seriously good-looking slices, and North of Brooklyn ” looks to bridge the gap between these two solitudes [chain pizza joints and upscale pizza restaurants] by offering high end pizza for takeout and delivery, not to mention by-the-slice.”
And yay! More pizza! Picea997 seems to have opened up at 997 Dupont Street in Dovercourt Village over the past couple weeks, and UrbanSpoon’ers and Yelp’ers (well, two and one, respectively) seem to be liking the joint. Take-out and eat-in, gourmet wood-fired ‘za, some traditional Italian delights, and booze. That’s a nice mix, right?
