These days everyone has heard the word paleo (the paleo diet is the Atkins of 2014) but it isn’t just about the diet anymore. With Jason Battiste, it’s also about fitness. “Paleo Fighter, based on caveman methodology, is a return to our foundations, appreciating the effective results of basic movements,” says Jason, who turned his 22 years of kickboxing experience into the best workout I’ve ever tried.
Every Wednesday for the past couple of weeks I’ve worked out with Jason; the workout is based entirely on his philosophy that we should fight tired because as he often says, “You’ll always be tired in the ring; if you don’t train tired you’ll never be prepared for a fight.” I love the philosophy so much and I’ve started to apply it to my everyday life. You can’t practice to be great without pushing yourself as hard as you can in practice.

When I head to the gym to meet Jason I do so with a mixture of excitement and dread. I know my workout will be great but I also know that it’s going to hurt and he’s going to make me work for my dinner. When I arrive, the first thing we do is stretch out and then it’s on to the battling ropes where I slam the 3-inch thick, 50-foot-long ropes up and down for twenty counts, followed by a smaller set of ropes that I ripple for twenty more counts. After the ropes, I push a sleigh with a 90-pound weight on it across the room, which feels easy for about 5 feet before it feels like my legs are burning. Only then do we fight. We kick and punch and jab across the room twice, ending up back where we started: at the sleigh which now needs to go back to it’s rightful place – and guess who gets to push it there? Yeah, it’s me. Finally, to end the first set, we punch a bag on the ground for twenty more counts. One set lasts about 5 minutes, I take a 1-minute break, and then we go again. Try repeating that 5 times and you’ll get an idea of what the Paleo Fighter is like.
While the work-out is tough I’ve never met a better trainer than Jason. He spends the whole session telling me that I can do it, encouraging me to give just a little bit more without ever yelling at me. If you’re looking for a challenge and you want to see results fast, the Paleo Fighter is the way to go. One session and you’ll be hooked!
