We can’t help but wonder if Disney makes movies with selling Halloween costumes in mind, more so than cashing out at the box office. After all, whether it’s old-school classics like The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and Snow White coming in and out of prominence with next-genners (more often than leather pants and Converse sneakers re-emerge on the street-style scene), it seems like $45.00 highly-flammable party store costumes are where the real money is at. So what movies and pop culture events inspired the most popular costumes for Halloween 2014? Fire up the heater because things are about to get chilly, if you catch our (ice-cold) drift.
According to Google’s recently released list of the top 10 most searched Halloween costumes of 2014, characters Elsa and Olaf from Disney’s Frozen easily took the top two spots like they’re the Venus and Serena Williams of the festive season. Nearly 40-year-old Angelina Jolie inspired the No. 3 costume on the list, which makes us wonder if we’ll be seeing Zahara rockin’ a mini-Mommy ensemble whilst trick-or-treating around New Orleans come October 31st (we’d expect Shiloh to follow Daddy’s World War Z lead, if we were placing bets… which we totally aren’t — wink wink). So what else makes up the top 10 list of most searched Halloween costumes according to the fine folks at Google who know us better than our own parents?
Here are the top 10 Halloween costumes of 2014…

1. Elsa (Frozen)
2.Olaf (Frozen)
3. Maleficent
4. Ninja Turtle
5. Anna (Frozen)
6. Black Widow (The Avengers)
7. Captain America
8. Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy)
9. Dog Spider
10. Assassin’s Creed
Um, apparently “Dog Spider” is a viral YouTube video we’ve never heard of until just now, so score one for the social media era for a Halloween top 10 first. Expect a ton of other Guardians of the Galaxy besides Groot to show up at your door or at your Halloween party as well. We’re predicting Gamora (inspired by Zoe Zaldana, obvi) will be the “sexy devil” of 2014.
As far as DIY Halloween costume searches go, you know that we’ve already started our annual DIY Halloween Costume Series: 2014 Edition, which includes this week’s DIY Halloween Costume: Daenerys Targaryen, but apparently Game of Thrones characters don’t even make Google’s top 10 most-searched DIY costumes for 2014, which are:
1. DIY Elsa costume
2. DIY mermaid costume (see, what did we tell you about The Little Mermaid?)
3. DIY couples costumes (for people we expect to be broken up by Halloween 2015, obviously)
4. DIY Minion costume
5. DIY Minnie Mouse costume (for children still too young to articulate their actual costume wishes)
6. DIY Disney costumes
7. DIY Ninja Turtle costume
8. DIY superhero costume (it’s called “wearing a bed sheet as a cape”)
9. DIY Olaf costume
10. DIY Wonder Woman costume (gawd, join Tinder already, right?)
