I think we can all agree that after the year and a half the restaurant industry has faced, we should be doing everything we can to lift Toronto businesses up, right? Well apparently not everyone is on the same page because 6ix Buzz posted a video of a Hong Shing kitchen staff member scraping up spilt marinade from the ground and bringing it back inside without any context. Not only was this video taken completely out of context, but Hong Shing has been recovering from a recent fire so this was the absolute worst time for any added stress.

Hong Shing
Earlier this week, a video was posted of a Hong Shing staff member cleaning up spilt marinade from the ground and scooping it back into a bucket and bringing it back inside. Taken out of context, the user posted the video with the caption “Please don’t support Hong Shing anymore this is disgusting,” and 6ix Buzz quickly shared the post with the caption “Hong Shing say it ain’t so… ????????????????”

Users quickly started commented things like “5 second rule”, “Extra flavour”, “This is straight outta the office when Kevin spilt his chili” and “Man said it’s alright, no one will know” but others defended Hong Shing with comments like “Maybe they’re just cleaning up the mess” and “They’re cleaning up a spill!”
“We are disappointed that we still have to address issues and stories such as this recent post on 6ixBuzz where they continue the discriminatory narrative of Chinese restaurants being unsanitary and did not reach out to us to fact check or find out how the product was disposed of,” reads a statement posted by the restaurant to IG Stories on Tuesday.
“Hong Shing has a full operational guideline on the handling and disposal of damaged goods. In the event that goods have been damaged during the receiving process in public facing spaces, all steps should be taken to restore the area to its original state. Damaged goods are moved into the Hong Shing premises to be received, inspected and documented by management regardless of condition. Losses are clearly marked for disposal and is removed by a food waste disposal service and not bundled with general waste We work closely with Toronto Public Health and follow all DineSafe guidelines.”
How to Support
The fake news spread by 6ix Buzz has added a tremendous amount of stress to Hong Shing’s staff as they are already recovering from a fire and dealing with the uncertainties of the pandemic. Anti-Asian hate in Toronto has been displayed again through this event and the spreading of the idea that Asian restaurants are unsanitary. Together we can put our money where our mouth is and support Hong Shing with our business! Check them out for dine-in, takeout or even their branded beer merch! You can support them here.
