This seemingly never-ending pandemic has cut off access to much of the outside world, particularly in large cities like Toronto. Lockdown has forced the residents of the city to stay within the small confines of their high-rise apartments without the capacity to exercise as they normally would. One program has created an initiative to handle this growing issue and made spaces for exercise and mobility within this large city. ActiveTO is a unique and expanding program that has cultivated a space for people desperate to head back into the outside world.

Mobility and Exercise for Toronto
In Toronto neighbourhoods, ActiveTO has created space for mobility for any resident itching to ride a bike or just take a leisurely walk with their family. Due to less traffic congestion, ActiveTO has utilized neighbourhood roads that are currently less busy to let people safely exercise while they can socially distance themselves from others doing the same. ActiveTO has also used closed roads for these spaces and roads that connect them to outdoor areas like parks or lakes, where people can bike to, walk their dogs, or take a light stroll. Further, they also promote cycling as a means to commute to work and have designated roads for these prospects as well.

ActiveTO has meticulously picked roads that were adjacent to recreational trails for their inspired initiative. They have picked roads that connect to trails like the Martin Goodman trail and up around Bayview. ActiveTO has also chosen other routes where cars could easily avoid these exercising pedestrians to avoid major traffic issues. Through all of this planning and hard work, the program has implemented the ActiveTO Cycling Network which is the largest increase in on-road cycling facilities Toronto has ever done. This network is an excellent alternative to transit and will make it easier for many within the city to get to work or go to their shopping destinations.
Go Outside Today
ActiveTO has ensured outdoor spaces for anyone wanting to bask in the sun and nice weather in the city. While COVID-19 is still very much present, programs like ActiveTO have implemented designated areas that will allow everyone interested in exercising outside to do so in a safe and socially distanced fashion.
