A recent report released by a matchmaking website reveals that university students in Toronto are at the top of the list of those searching for sugar daddies.
As life gets more expensive and the job market becomes more competitive, millennials are looking for alternative options to bring in the cheddar. Whether it’s selling their panties online, hacking Instagram accounts or picking up delivery shifts on Uber, people are getting creative with their side hustles.

And one side hustle (or full-time hustle for some,) that’s picking up speed is escorting. With shows like The Girlfriend Experience, documentaries being released on popular networks like Netflix and CBC, and lavish lives being flaunted on social media, the “mutually beneficial” profession has been picking up popularity in the mainstream.
There are 7 million Canadian individuals seeking arrangement. Of those on the website, just under 700,000 are Canadians and 206,800 are Canadian students.
According to a recent report released by matchmaking website Seeking Arrangement, there are 7 million individuals seeking arrangement. Of those on the website, just under 700,000 are Canadians and 206,800 are Canadian students. Interestingly enough, it’s not just females who are searching for sugar daddies, about 15% of the Canadian total are men. And those are just the numbers on Seeking Arrangement. The numbers don’t include those who seek out escorting opportunities on their own or through other agencies.
The report also revealed which Canadian universities have the most student sign-ups. Surprisingly – or maybe not so surprisingly considering Toronto is one of the most expensive Canadian cities to live in with some of the highest average home prices across Canada – University of Toronto, Ryerson and York University topped the list, with University of Guelph students joining them.

A spokeswoman for Seeking Arrangement told the Calgary Herald that the average monthly “allowance” given by clients is about $2700, not including gifts or other “perks”, which works out to be just over $32,000 annually. To put this amount into perspective, those in Ontario working full-time minimum wage jobs are making around $24,000 annually. So you can see why students might find the occupation, which doesn’t always include sexual acts, appealing.

But while there’s a huge monetary benefit for sugar babies, there are also a lot of risks.
If you’re struggling financially and think this option might be for you, it’s important to remember: just because escorting sounds easy, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be treated like any other job. Especially since unlike other occupations, there are no set workers rights or recourse if terms are breached.
Educate yourself, protect yourself – legally, mentally, and physically – and make sure you know what you’re getting into before your begin.
